The large tree quickly became "The Boss" while the surrounding trees represented the politicians jockeying for his attention. One morning as I was waking, when the piece was nearly complete, I saw in my mind the red band behind the wall -- and knew it had to be included in the piece. Somewhat hesitant, but without question, I went down to the studio and added red on the horizon. The Mattis hearing seemed remotely hopeful. It was a hopeful, but anxious time. The four Breathing Trees in the Election Tree series, told me as I drew, "Just breathe! You will make it through this trying time." I began to understand how trees are relegated to stay put where they grow. They too must breathe through whatever weather or destructive activities occur around them. The entire country seemed excited, not knowing who would win. In order to calm down I began "journaling" by outlining this stand of trees behind the John Chaffee statue in Colt State Park in Bristol, Rhode Island. My thoughts mind flew out of the pen. Soon I was "drawing" the words and sometimes writing the words that became the silhouette of the trees and the foreground from which they rise.
